The $498m about to be blown on the Australian War Memorial could be spent better | Paul Daley

What a toxic, pointless debate. In no way does spending this amount of money on the War Memorial come at a cost of helping veterans or anything else. Injecting currency into the economy to make it function is what the government does. Dollars are the one thing the government has an endless supply of. The constraints on government spending are the availability of real resources to spend it on. Trying to buy what’s in limited supply is what causes inflation. The only question worth asking is whether the consumption of labour and raw materials on this project is a worthwhile use of them, or if those resources are more urgently required elsewhere. Nothing else. Providing for veterans properly should be done regardless of whether the memorial gets extended.
Did the expensive project just get the rubber stamp because of the magic Anzac cloak?
